About the Australian African Foundation for Retention and Opportunity (AAFRO)

Australian African Foundation for Retention and Opportunity (AAFRO) is a non-for-profit charity organisation that exists primarily to build a bridge between young people of African descent, their families, and the wider Australian community.

Our mission is to create sustainable access to opportunities for immigrants, refugees, and vulnerable young people, particularly those from African backgrounds. We do this by supporting them to reach their full potential as individuals and integrate harmoniously into the wider Australian community.

Our vision is that Africans and other culturally and linguistically diverse communities (CALD) should feel welcomed, trusted, and understood. To do so, we:

  • assist with their integration into wider society by providing them with education, counselling, self-development skills, housing assistance, and cultural advice to re-establish their economic and emotional independence.

  • develop and run programs to improve their livelihood, including those that focus on preventing poverty and distress and providing educational opportunities to improve economic and social circumstances for at-risk youth.

  • promote greater awareness in schools, government and non-government agencies and service providers of the circumstances of young people African and other descent, as well as their family living in Australia.

AAFRO's philosophy

AAFRO programs are based on community restorative a practice derived from a variety of traditional justice practices that promote collectivism rather than the individualist approach to everyday life, including indigenous justice circles, the African philosophy of Ubuntu, and modern developments. AAFRO’s Community Circle philosophy, based on Ubuntu, is built on human universality, and traditional moral values of respect, integrity, togetherness, compassion, fairness, and dignity.

AAFRO programs are designed to address community-wide issues by: (i) working with individuals and groups to reach their potential while they are in the community, including taking full responsibility for their actions, (ii) working towards restoring family relationships, (iii) helping incarcerated people to reintegrate into their communities, and (iv) women's empowerment and community harmony.
